Types of Empathy Empathy isn't just one thing; psychologists often break it down into different components: Cognitive Empathy : This is the intellectual ability to understand another person's mental state. It's about putting yourself in their shoes to see their point of view, without necessarily feeling their emotions. For example, a skilled negotiator might use cognitive empathy to anticipate what the other party is thinking. Emotional Empathy : Also known as affective empathy, this is the ability to feel what another person is feeling. If a friend is sad, you might feel a pang of sadness too.
